Textbook: Lynch, M.J., Long, M.A., Stretesky, P.B., Barrett, K.L. (2017). Green Criminology: Crime, Justice, and the Environment. Oakland: University of California Press.Approximately 5 pages, or 1250 words, double-spaced, size 12 font, plus a bibliography on an additional, separate page.In this assignment you are required to:1. Find a recent peer reviewed scholarly journal article (published between 2000-2020) on research within the field of green criminology (or environmental crime or environmental justice more generally – as long as it relates to the class. If it’s not from the field of “green criminology” proper, you might want to use that as point to contrast in your paper!). “Peer reviewed” means that before the articles appear in the journal, a panel of experts review them. This panel is tasked with ensuring the article is of good academic quality.2. Briefly summarize the article. Consider the following questions: What is the topic? What is the main argument? What is the evidence? How was the research conducted (what method did they use? Was it qualitative or quantitative? Did they use interviews or content analysis, etc.).3. Compare and contrast the information in the article with three ideas, concepts, or topics presented throughout the course textbook such as a research method, topic of study for green criminology, or a theoretical orientation that was discussed. You may also draw on information presented through films and guest lectures, although this is not mandatory.Consider the following examples:a) Does the article add to an area of study that was mentioned in the textbook, for example ocean acidification? Was new information on this topic presented? Does it support or contrast the information provided in the textbook?b) Does the article use a research method discussed in the textbook, for example ethnography? What more did you learn about this method—how was it implemented? Over what period of time, etc.? Does it use a method the textbook does not discuss?c) Does your article help us consider the debate regarding Green Criminology as a unique discipline or sub-discipline? Were the authors criminologists or sociologists or from other disciplines? Do they refer to the Green Criminology or environmental crime?d) What aspect of criminology does the article relate to? How does the text discuss this? Does it refer to laws or enforcement or criminological research methods? Or does it understand crime more broadly, such as in terms of the social harms perspective? How does the article add to what the textbook has taught us about criminology as a means of understanding the environment?e) How does the article approach “green crime”? Does the article discuss the topics of green crime discussed in the textbook such as political economy, ecological withdrawals or additions, contested illnesses, environmental laws, harms, injustice, etc.? How does the article expand our understanding of those terms?f) Or, find your own way of comparing and contrasting the article with the textbook! In each example, outline what the text says about the topic, then show how the article adds a new example (explain clearly what that is), expands on what we learned in the textbook, offers something new, or even contradicts information from the textbook. Be specific – discuss clearly the information found in the article and textbook.4. Your paper needs an introduction and conclusion. Introduction: Briefly outline what this paper will do, the article you choose, and what aspects of the textbook you are using to discuss this article. Conclusion: summarize what you learned—what contribution does this article make to the study of Green Criminology?5. Your paper needs a bibliography. This may only have two titles—the textbook and the journal article—but please include it all the same.Notes:Please use APA style for your in-text referencing and bibliography.Grammar and clarity of writing matters! Proof read your work.
