For this week’s written assignment, you will read and analyze two scenarios and make suggestions on how to address each as though you are the health care leader responsible for making the decisions. Note: References and citations are required for full credit.
Scenario 1:
An employee who has been with the organization for over five years has started to come into the office later and later each day. The expected office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; however, this employee rarely comes into the office at 8AM. The employee usually arrives between 8:30 am and 9:00 am. You do not have any problems or issues with the employee’s work output. In fact, the employee is a good performer. However, you feel that it is improper to pay the employee for a 40 hour week when the employee is clocking in 35-37 hours weekly. Subtle hints up to this point making the employee aware that you are uncomfortable with the late arrivals has not been successful. You have scheduled a meeting with the employee to address this concern. How would you confront the employee? Using information from the assigned reading, answer the following questions in a 2-page essay:
How would you begin the conversation with the employee?
How would you suggest remedying the situation? Describe your suggestions using the methods discussed in the assigned reading.
How will you respond to the employee if they are resistant during the meeting?
What would the steps of corrective action be for the employee if they fail to correct their performance and you have to further discipline the employee?
Scenario 2:
Mentoring non-performing employees can be especially difficult if the employee is substantially older than the leader him/herself. Young employees out of college, or new to the workforce, will respond differently to authority than personnel who have decades of life and organizational experience. Leaders cannot – and should not – attempt to mentor personnel older than themselves in the same manner they mentor junior-in-age employees. This strategy and philosophy will surely result in failure.
Traditional management hierarchies in the United States may often be associated with age. In this regard, workers in leadership positions are often older and more experienced than their employees. This may be especially true in medicine where many professionals enter into this career field at an early age and stay in that profession for a lifetime. However, this is not always the case. Healthcare administrators are commonly younger than those that they lead and manage. Using the assigned reading and any additional external sources of your choice, answer the following questions (2-3 sentences for each question):
Why might more mature employees be resistant to mentoring by younger leaders?
What challenges do you foresee there may be when mentoring an employee who is older than the healthcare leader?
How would you suggest a younger healthcare leader mentor an employee who is older?
How might the approaches differ with an older vs. younger mentee?
How would you forge a mentorship relationship with a mentee if you are significantly younger and the employee is resistant?
